Vegas... Awesome!

Jake and I are in vegas right now taking a week vacation, we felt bad coz his dada couldn't come with us because he has work. We want to take a break from the cold, freezing, icy, snowy pittsburgh just for a week. I heard from hubby that the snow there right now were 7 inches and there are still more coming down. Oh! vegas is awesome, no snow jake can wear short and t-shirt here. Hes eyes always wondering around, with people everywhere and wider road. Hes been good since the time we left from pittsburgh, at the airport, and in plane. Today, we went to the filipino store, I'm so happy to see those philippine products, we don't have filipino store in our place. Chel and her hubby kelly are so nice and very accomodating. We look forward to meet dallas their handsome grandson this thursday. My apology for not able to reciprocate to my ec dropper sometimes, I'll do my best to keep it up.

Good Friday

Start your day with a smile! I sure did, with my baby right next to me smiling when I open my eyes this morning, another good news too when I checked my mail my first post in my first paid blog got approved. That means a lot to me. Another reason to smile is, after a long long long time of convincing my husband to let me go to vegas to visit my sister, today he finally said yes , I can take a vacation with jake for a week probably next week. And guys its TGIF, Oh boy! I used to love fridays before when i was still single and working but now a little i supposed. Have a nice weekend to all.

Time out or Stick out

From my previous post, time outs i can tell really works here in America. I always watch family oriented show and parenting shows on TV like the Jon and Kate plus 8, I see how they used that technique putting their kids in time out once they misbehave to let them know that what they did is not good or not right, and their kids understand what time out is. Meanwhile, in other country like philippines, where I came from, I don't think so time out works to all in there. Though other parents apply that to their kids some of them succeeded i guess and most of them failed. Based from my experience as a grade school teacher in a public school before, I tried to apply that techniques to my 50 kids in the classroom and it wasn't working. I remember one time, there was one trouble maker kids that I put in a time out, instead of feeling sorry for what he did, he even liked it, he stayed in the corner making silly things, and distructing his classmates from their work. I can't apply corporal punishment either coz its not allowed, I called the parents attention regarding the behavior, the parents won't come to the school. I found out that kid not scared anymore with any slight punishment because he was immune to the stick or belt his parents used to beat at them. In their home everytime they made mistake , their parents would beat them hard. What works for us there most of the time is the stick out, or spanking everytime we done something wrong, and in fairness there are also few parents instead of spanking their kids or putting them in a time out they talk to them in a nice way, telling their kids to not to do bad things again i don't know how effective would that be. I don't agree with beating up your kids to learn their mistake. I myself grew up getting spanked by my parents everytime i did wrong and there were times that i hated it. Now that i have my own kid i don't want to inflict pain to them, I think i like this time out, as a way of disciplining them. Every parents has their own way of disciplining their children and they know whats best for them..

Time-outs How to make them work (12-24 mo.)

I'm kinda wondering how to make this TIME-OUTS
work since jake is going to be 1 year old in a couple of months from now, i talk to my sister since she's dealing with it with BB Dallas and his already in his TERRIBLE TWOS so he gets time outs a few times a day so here, i found some of the details i need to learn. This post is originally from my sister chel.

When your child acts up, the best way to nip the behavior in the bud is often to remove him from the activity at hand and give him some quiet time alone. This technique, known as a time-out, is an effective, nonviolent way to shape behavior. Here are the keys to a successful time-out:

Understand what a time-out is — and isn't

A time-out isn't a punishment. It's an opportunity for your child to learn how to cope with frustration and modify his behavior. While your child is in a time-out, he's on his own, so try to let him sit in solitude for a few moments. Any attention from you, positive or negative, will serve as reinforcement for his behavior. Instead, quiet time alone will allow him to switch gears and calm down. (If you manage to step aside, you can take a deep breath and do the same instead of getting caught up in his struggle.) What's great about a time-out is that it can defuse and redirect an escalating situation in an unemotional way. It lets you teach your child without setting a negative example, the way yelling does.
Make sure your child is old enough for a formal time-out

Because toddlers find it hard to sit still, trying to make your little one stay in a certain place for a prescribed length of time may well disintegrate into a chase scene. Here's what happens: Your child runs away from his time-out spot. You catch him, then struggle to make him stay in one place. You threaten, he laughs, delighted with this new game — or cries, frustrated by the requirement. You grab, he bolts. Meanwhile, because he has a short attention span, your toddler forgets why you wanted him to sit still in the first place. Instead of helping your child regain his self-control, you find yourself in a power struggle.

For this reason, traditional time-outs won't really work until sometime between your toddler's second and third birthdays. Watch for signs that he understands what's acceptable and what's not. One clue is if he reminds you of the rules when you break them, too. For example, if he catches you doing something you normally wouldn't allow him to do — say, eating a snack on the sofa — he may say, "You're not supposed to do that, Mommy." Until your toddler shows this kind of appreciation of the need to follow rules, hold off on time-outs. Otherwise, he won't understand why he's being corrected, and you may get frustrated and abandon the strategy prematurely. check out more about your baby's stages at www.babycenter.com

Earn by blogging

It's been more than a month now since I joined this blogosphere. The art of blogging is one way of voicing out whats in our mind, our interest, experiences, musing and rambling in our daily lives. In short our personal journal or diary. While doing so, we learn more and get the idea of earning by blog advertising. The way it works is you just have to write your honest reviews about the advertisers products and services, that also include links and text within the post. As what the word advertising means the action of calling something to the attention of the public especially by paid announcement. So, get paid to post about promoting certain products in your blog, thats what blog advertising is. You may want to start to post and get paid through paid to blog site but stay away from BlogAdvertisingStore or former Paying Post.

Ice age has come to an end

Took this yersterday most part of the wall kind of icy still, but it started melting .

First of all I wanna thank those bloggers who sympatized with us regarding this icy bathroom. Well guys the ice melted this morning, our ice age life hopefully will come to an end. I'll cross my fingers to that, since winter isn't over yet. And the water is working well because we keep it running every now and then both hot and cold.
Right now, the temperature here are in double digit, not that bad compare to the glaciers on the wall lol. We have like 5 inches snow outside but not that cold, so we took jake outside this morning for 5 minutes to see and touch the snow.

Icy Bathroom

For this couple of days we were below zero here, it was super dooper cold for me. Hubby woke up this morning swearing, the water pipe froze again no water coming out when he flushed the toilet. Before he left for work, he woke me up and gave me this "matter of life and death" instructions. I wasn't really paying attention about what he was talking about, like keep the water running, especially the hot one in the bathroom and kitchen, flush the toilet every 15 mins and so on and so forth. I went back to sleep and then when I woke around 9:00, i checked the bathroom and there it was, the wall were covered with ice and still is until now.

Floods in CDO philippines

CAGAYAN DE ORO -- Rampaging floodwaters again destroyed infrastructures, livestock and crops in 16 municipalities and two cities of Misamis Oriental Wednesday. CAGAYAN DE ORO. The stretch of highway between the Coca Cola plant and Ororama Mega Center was submerged in waist-high waters Wednesday morning. (JB R. Deveza)

This is just one of the pics I saw and read at sunstar. This is actually one of the road going to our place. My parents house has water all over and the roof and walls got wet and damaged from 3 consecutive days of non stop rain. All their clothings got soak and wet too. I'm just glad to harm done to them. I read atleast 3 has confirmed dead and 1 still remains missing.

Family Story time

It's Saturday, the weather is cold (34degree fahrenheit) as usual, with 2 inches snow stick to the ground, but it wasn't that bad because it's not windy. Our local library here has hold different activities for babies and toddler. Every monday at 6:00 pm and saturday at 11:00 am is their schedule for Family Story time open to all ages. So we went to the library this morning to have jake join in their saturday family story time. Kids of different ages with their respective mommy or daddy were there too. This is our first time to be in that activity, we got there 10 mins early, so we let him play for a while. The story teller begin the story with a song and stretching, and showing the kids the picture of arthur from the cover of the book. The story was about using one of our sences. She read the story to the kids and asked them questions while she's reading to them. I tried to get jake to listen, well he paid attention for a few minutes and back again staring with that chinese girl next to us. Those older kids were so cute, and witty they participated well and answer whatever questions the story teller ask. Jake and those other babies of his age and younger, I don't know if they were really paying attention to the story, but for sure they enjoy the singing, the clapping and all. They even want to keep that egg shaker and trying to eat those cinamon and mint that the story teller has for them to smell. The story telling ended with an action songs and rymes. At the end of the whole activities, she provided all the kids with this paper plate cut like a mask and some crayons and marker to draw a face with, but jake wanted to eat the crayon so we left and head home. There were snow and sleet falling when we headed home and jake i think like it coz he didn't react to the cold, he lick those snow that has dropped onto his face. That was fun, we think of doing that next saturday again if the weather is fine or try their other activities. Try check your local library about any activities for babies and toddler, i think it's good for them to have an interaction with other babies or kids.

Beware with little teeth

My son has 4 teeth already. He will be 10 months next week. He likes biting things especially our rubber mat that has numbers on it. He would pull those number and bite them, or anything that he can put in his mouth, well except banana he like sucking it than biting them. This morning, he was in our bed waiting for me to get up. I know he wanted to go out and watch his favorite morning cartoons but i didn't let him. I was still sleepy, and I didn't want to get up yet. I'm holding his waist while he was playing and kept pulling my hair when all of a sudden he bit my arm. Ouch! was my first word in shock, that bite woke up my whole sences, and there my baby next to me just clapping his hands, smilling at me. I checked my arm, saw a tiny teeth mark. Who would have thought those little teeth could hurt like that. Don't underestimate those little teeth.

cooties (yuk)

Warning: This post may sound yucky and nasty, it's up to you to finish or stop reading it.
It may cause stigma to other people especially here in america because cooties is not common here. I read this in some health magazine, I think its good to share it to the public by posting it in my blog. I was a public elementary school teacher in cebu city, I encountered a lot of this pest like the head lice to some of my children in the class. You just have to let them practice the proper hygiene and make it a habit.

By definition, cooties are lice (and one cootie is a louse).
HEAD LICE
Description: Tiny, wingless, parasitic insect. Feeds on blood from scalp.
Symptoms: Can start with a feeling of tickling or crawling on the head, followed by itching and scratching.
Treatment: Over-the-counter medicated shampoo, cream rinse or lotion.
Note: Nits and lice need to be removed by hand on children 2 years old and younger.
Prevention: Do not share personal items from brushes and combs to headbands, helmets and towels. Wash all bed linens and clothing in very hot (130 degree Fahrenheit) water; dry on hot cycle for atleast 20 minutes.
Other microscopic beings that considered cooties are:
PINWORMS
Description: Intestinal, contagious (but harmless) infection caused by tiny parasitic worms.
Symptoms: Rectal itching, particularly at night. Bed-wetting - caused by pinworms irritating the urethra.
Treatment: Pediatrician-prescribed anti-worm medicine, and an anti-itching cream.
Prevention: Daily bathing and changing of underware. Hand-washing after going to the bathroom, after playing outside and before eating.
SCABIES
Description: Tiny mites' eggs cause skin infection of small blisters and itchy bumps.
Symptoms: Severe itching, particularly between fingers and toes.
Treatment: call the pediatric dermatologist, who may prescribe a medicated cream or lotion. An antibiotic also may be necessary if your child develops a skin infection from scratching.
Prevention: Do not share personal items. Wash linens and clothing in hot water. Vacuum thoroughly; discard vacuum bag.
CHIGGERS
Description: Tiny, red mites with claws that pierce the skin to allow them to inject saliva to dissolve skin cells, which they ingest.
Symptoms: Itchy, red bump that grows and becomes even itchier.
Treatment: Prescribe medication to stop the itching and infection and infection caused by scratching.
Prevention: Insect reppelent with 10 percent to 30 percent DEET. Wear long- sleeved shirts and long pants when hinking or playing in grassy areas. Wash clothes in hot water, and take a hot, soapy shower immediately after going indoors.
RINGWORMS
Description: A fungal infection ( similar to athlete's foot and jock itch) found on the scalp or on the skin, as well as the nails on hands and feet.
Symptoms: Small, pimple-like sore, which becomes flaky, like dandruff. Itchy, red skin with circular, pathcy lesions.
Treatment: Antifungal ointment for skin, or oral medicationfor scalp and nails.
Prevention: Do not share personal items. Wear flip-flops in locker rooms and showers.
TICKS
Description: Blood-sucking parasites. Part of the arachnid family, there are hundreds of different kinds of ticks. The deer tick can can carry Lyme disease, and the dog tick can carry Rocky Mountain spotted fever ( although cases of Rocky Mountain spotted fever in humans are rare in this region).
Symptoms: Some redness around bite area.
Treatment: Use a pair if tweezers to remove the ticks. Swab the site with rubbing alcohol. The pediatrician may want to see the tick to determine if antibiotics should be prescribed.
Prevention: Wear enclosed shoes or boots and long pants when in woods or grassy areas.

officially over

Holiday is over, it is officially back to regular busy day. Work, mails and probably children start going back to school . Some schools and classes will resume on next week, and so is hubbys class. I'm just glad he didnt have to go back to school right away, he's been a very good helper to me this holiday. Cold winter weather is still here though we hated it but we have to deal with it . I bet there were a little snow around in some places, we have like an inch of snow in our neighborhood but it started melting down. We took jake outside for a walk even if its a little windy. We need to go out once in a while to get more exercise and fresh air. I've seen other parents taking out their little kids too. We stop at the library to check out for any babys and toddler activities they have. Numbers of people in the library doing their work, others in their cars going to work and stuck in a little traffic, yeah right the traffic is back too. Everything is back to the normal busy work days at full blast. I wish we had a longer holidays.

Well, let's enjoy and look forward for more holidays this year 2009 and have fun.
