4 Tips for Building Your Own Sauna

Building your own personal sauna is one of the most indulgent things you can do for yourself. But what if you aren't sure how to get started? Here are just four tips for turning your relaxing daydreams into a wonderful reality.

1. Hire the Right Contractor
Look for someone with experience in building saunas and other personal spa projects. If you aren't sure where to find such journeymen, get more info here.

2. Consider a Sauna Kit
Sauna kits are ideal for do-it-yourself types who aren't sure they have the expertise to build one from scratch. You'll be able to follow an outline and have instructions nearby in case something goes wrong.

3. Choose Your Wood
Western red cedar is the most popular choice, but any kind of cedar will do. If you're aiming for a certain feel or visual aesthetic, you might want to shop around for different timber types.

4. Measure Everything
In fact, measure everything twice. You'll waste a lot of time and money if your wood needs to be re-cut or your pipes aren't reaching where they need to be. Don't forget to include a little "wiggle room" as well.

These are just four tips for building your own sauna. Whether you're looking for a place of rest or a steamy arena where you and your spouse can escape for a few hours, it's important to plan as much as you can before you start cutting. A little precaution now will save you lots of headache in the long run.

I'd love the chance to build my own sauna. I think it would add to the experience. I live in a great old house in the mountains of Colorado. I considered turning one of the giant cedar closets into a sauna, but had no idea where to start, and I am not the sort to just contract it out. Thanks!
